Argostoli

Argostoli is the capital city of Cephalonia and surrounded by dense vegetation and water, offering a unique combination of mountain and sea. Argostoli was destroyed by the 7.2 Richter earthquake, which caused the loss of many lives, while uplifted the whole island by 60 cm. Over the years the island got the most secure building conditions and it turned to a scenic city ideal for family holidays.

Makrys Gialos

Makrys Gialos beach is one of the best choices near Argostoli. Makrys Gialos is a long sandy beach and one of the busiest beaches continuously awarded with GNTO blue flag. It’s well organized with sunbeds and has watersports facilities and a beach bar.

Fanari beach

Fanari beach is located very close to Argostoil, specifically at Katavothres area. It’s ideal for children since it’s a shallow and sandy beach. It’s a beautiful destination to enjoy romantic walks along the beach or even camp at the area is offered for camping.

Ai Chelis beach Kefalonia

Ai Chelis beach

Close to Svoronata village, at the south part of the island, lies the beautiful beach of Ai Chelis. It’s a shallow beach that progressively deepens, impressive as to the landscape that surrounds it and to the purity of water. The beach is embraced by huge rocks offering a special acoustic. It’s an organized beach with sunbeds and beach-bar and it has available space for beach volley.

Trapezaki beach is 13km far from Argostoli and it’s divided in two parts with a traditional taverna in between. Shallow and sandy it’s offered for children’s play until late evening.

Katavothres

Katavothres are three kilometers far from Argostoli. Katavothres means cracks next to the sea, at these cracks the water flows and follows routes underneath almost all over the island. It was discovered at 1963, when the geologists Victor Maourin and Yiosef Tsetl poured 160kg of color to the cracks. Several days later the colored water appeared at Melissani lake, having passed through other subway routes to end up eventually to the sea.

The Archeological museum of Argostoli awaits to host you at its three large halls in which there are historical exhibits more than 5.000 years old from the stone age until Roman era.

Saint George Castle (kastro)

Saint George’s castle dominates above the village of Peratata. The wall’s length reaching 600m. and its total size of 16 acres it was constructed by the 12th century AD to become the capital of the island. From historical references it’s written that there is an underground tunnel that connects the castle with Argostoli but such a thing hasn’t been discovered by the archeological researches

Monastery of Saint Gerasimos at Valsamata

Valsamata

In the middle of Cephalonia, at Omala plateau, lies the settlement of Valsamata. Having Ainos mountain dominating the landscape the village of Valsamata is located very close to the monastery of Saint Gerasimos, which was founded by the very same patron of the island. It’s worth mentioning that at the 16th of August and 20th of October the saint’s relic is carried outside the monastery to reach the plane tree planted by Saint Gerasimos.

The Lighthouse of Saint Theodore

The Lighthouse is located about 3 kilometers far from Argostoli and its name comes from a small church nearby. It’s Argostoli’s lighthouse with a plain view of Vardiani islet and Lixouri. The lighthouse was completely flattened by 1953’s destructive earthquake and ten years later it was completely rebuilt with respect to the initial architecture identity. Today besides walking along the coast, the restaurants and at the cafes of the area, you can enjoy a sunset like a work of art…

Lourdas beach is located 15km southeast from Argostoli. The beach is large in size with white pebbles and sand. It’s not a shallow beach and visitors are given the opportunity to indulge in various watersports. There are many restaurants and cafeterias along the beach.

Mycenaean Tombs of Mazarakata

Five kilometers far from Argostoli lies the biggest ancient Mycenaean cemetery of Ionian Sea Islands. The cemetery is of exceptional historical value since it was found intact. Bellow the different shapes and size tombs, there were underground paths and caves through which the transfer of the deceased was taking place. At the Archeological museum of Argostoli are exhibited objects that were recovered from the grave’s excavations

Deboset Bridge at Argostoli Kefalonia

Deboset Bridge

Deboset bridge dominates in Argostoli bay with its size almost reaches 700 meters length while it’s considered to be the longest stone bridge throughout the whole Europe. The bridge was initially wooden and by 1813 it connected Argostoli with the opposite region (bank- place). While crossing the pedestrian bridge you will see a monument in a shape of a pyramid which is a tribute to the manufacturers. The bridge is illuminated and it’s appropriate for walking or cycling. It’s worth walking till the end of it and enjoy the view of Argostoli from across.

Saint Andreas Milapidias Monastery

The monastery of Saint Andreas Milapidias is located nearby Peratata village and it’s named after the tree that grows there the “milapidia” which is a combination of an apple tree and a pear tree. The monastery has the ecclesiastical byzantine museum, a nunnery and Apostle Andrew sacred shrine of the foot.
